Maumee Valley Country Day School is seeking a student-centered, creative individual who orchestrates learning for students in engaging, challenging, and relevant ways to fulfill our personal, experiential, and global vision. The successful candidate is a resourceful and innovative teacher who uses various pedagogical techniques to reach all learners. The ideal candidate has experience teaching a wide range of student learners and can teach a varied class load, which may include AP courses. This person loves developing an experiential, problem-based curriculum that allows students to grapple with real-world questions and solutions. 

This position reports to the Head of the Upper School and collaborates closely with all Upper School faculty and the cross-divisional history/humanities department. As a full-time faculty member, the position offers all benefits afforded to full-time employees, including, but not limited to, comprehensive health benefits, paid life insurance, tuition remission, paid time off, and professional development.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Teach three sections of US History/Government and co-teach one section of AP US History
  • Meet performance goals established as part of the annual performance-planning process or as the result of organizational planning
  • Actively engage in personal and professional work in support of the school’s diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives 
  • Works independently with minimum supervision
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor 
  • Manage a student load of between 60 and 80 students
  • Nurture and support an advisee group of between 8 and 12 students
  • Participate in the life of the school by attending athletic, arts, fundraising, and other school events
  • Attend faculty and department meetings and other meetings as needed
  • Chaperone school functions, such as dances and school trips, as needed
  • Participate on committees and task forces as needed
  • Sponsor student clubs and activities as needed
  • Maintain open lines of communication with students, parents, and colleagues
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor 

Skills and Competencies:
  • Sense of humor and demonstrated success in building strong relationships with teenagers
  • Experience teaching foundational history/humanities skills
  • Flexible and adaptable; able to teach Advanced Placement, standard, and elective history/humanities courses
  • Willingness to embrace and learn experiential learning design and techniques
  • Ability to differentiate instruction
  • Ability to design units and lessons with a backward design framework, such as Understanding by Design
  • Ability to collaborate within and between departments both to advance the department’s goals and to build interdisciplinary learning opportunities
  • Capacity to maximize advantages of educational technology

Credentials:
  • Experience teaching social studies classes
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field required; master’s degree, relevant coursework, or relevant professional experience preferred

Faculty: You must be willing and able to secure an Ohio Permanent Non-Tax certificate or Professional Teaching license. The school will support you in obtaining this once you are hired. However, for compliance purposes, it must be secured within the first six months of employment.
